And today we would like to introduce another resident – Birnir Jón Sigurðsson.

Birnir Jón Sigurðsson is an Icelandic artist working with text, film, theatre as an author and performer. In 2014 -2019 he studied film studies (university of Iceland), theatre and performance (Icelandic University of Arts) and scenography in exchange studies (RESAD Madrid). As well as Reet Kudu, Birnir is interested in theater and experiments a lot. However, they are representatives of different generations, so the themes of the works are quite different.

Works of Birnir often revolve around environmental matters, ecology and climate change. It is an important topic in his work, so he chose to continue working on this theme while residing in Nida as well. The novel Drops is of the climate fiction genre. The different characters in the novel represent different influences and mindsets that affect climate change. Ecology and climate change is a relevent theme in daily life of people living in Nida, so the topics and issues covered in this novel resonates with them, as well as it should resonate with anybody in the world today.

Birnir Jón Sigurðsson works in theatre as well. He is a member of devised theatre groups CGFC and Ást og Karóki. He creates performances, plays and is the founder of tóma rýmið experimental theatre space in Reykjavík, Iceland. Birnir has hosted various events, such as – experimental theatre nights in tóma rýmið, experimental theatre festival Safe fest and Gullmolinn short film festival.

Although the main creative area for Birnir Jón Sigurðsson is theatre and performances, he has written two books as well. „Strá“ (Straws, published in 2019) and „Fuglabjargið“ (The Bird Cliff of Nowhere, 2021). „The Bird Cliff“ is a children’s book telling the story of a remote island off the East coast of Iceland and its inhabitants, various species of birds, over the course of a whole year. In January 2021 „The Bird Cliff of Nowhere“ premiered as an opera for children at the Reykjavík City Theatre and received very good reviews.

Birnir Jón Sigurðsson is a young artist, creating and experimenting with lots of different art forms and themes.
