Commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Lithuanian Literary Translators’ Union (LLVS), 21 March. 17:30 Klaipėda County Ievos Simonaitytė Public Library Conference Hall will host a meeting with translators “Let’s see the invisible”.
The event will include an exhibition of portraits of members of the Lithuanian Literary Translators’ Union created by Vladas Braziūnas, a discussion with Irena Aleksaitė, Jonė Ramunytė, Rūta Kumžienė-Jonynaitė, Audronė Kučinskienė, translators in residence at the International Translators and Writers’ Centre, and a presentation of the translators’ work and their special mission, as well as a presentation of the texts that are currently being translated by TVRC.
Imagine a world without translators and translations – no more books, no more films, no more concerts, no more events, no more knowledge about the structure of the world and of ourselves, scientists are still discovering and inventing, but it is still the property of their people. The world would not develop, it would be dull and flat.
Translators usually remain in the shadows, their names are not known to anyone, they are as if they do not exist. Translators are overshadowed by the greatness of the author, of the work, and it is forgotten that the translator is the co-author of the work, and that without his or her talent and skill, we would not be able to enjoy the work of great writers.
The Lithuanian Literary Translators’ Union (LLVS) has done a great deal of work over the 20 years of its existence to bring translators out of the shadows, and to ensure that their work is valued and visible. Gradually, the translator’s name is being heard more and more widely, prizes and special events are being awarded, communities of translators are forming, and their work is being publicly recognised as valuable and necessary. Translators take form, image and sound, but are still mostly invisible to the general public.
See the Invisible – invites you to see the people behind your favourite books, films, news, artworks and scientific discoveries. This event is a great opportunity to get acquainted with the special and creative work of a translator, to understand its importance not only for Lithuania, but also for the world.
